'Big Sam' Appointed Everton Manager After 4-0 Victory

Sam Allardyce (better known as 'Big Sam') has been appointed Everton manager today in hopes of saving what's left of the club's season. This was announced just one day after Everton's 4-0 thrashing of bottom-side West Ham, which Big Sam watched from the stands. The 63-year-old has signed a deal until the end of June 2019.

Everton are on the worst run of form since 1984 this season. They've been abysmal since the sacking of former manager Ronald Koeman more than 5 weeks ago, failing to get any points in both the domestic and European scenes. Considering the team they have mustered over the summer, spending a total of fifty four million pounds, and signing the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson, Jordan Pickford, and Wayne Rooney, the bottom quarter of the table is the last place you would expect Everton to place this season.

Although claiming to have 'no interest' in managing another club, Allardyce will take over from temporary caretaker David Unsworth, just six months after resigning from his role at Crystal Palace. He had first been approached by the club 3 weeks ago but was rumoured to have pulled out of talks when it was clear that he wasn't favourite to take over. But after failing to draw Marco Silva away from in-form Watford, Everton offered Big Sam a longer-term contract which persuaded him to join the club.

The seasoned manager has managed the likes of Bolton Wanderers, Sunderland, Newcastle United, Blackburn Rovers, West Ham and Crystal Palace in the Premier league, and is known for saving stuggling clubs from being relegated. This makes Big Sam the perfect fit for the club at the moment. After being appointed, Allardyce said:

I've always thought Everton was a great club. It is a great club. Obviously, the club has gone through a difficult spell and hopefully I can put that behind us as quickly as possible and start looking upwards again. Because, ultimately, it's the ambition of the club, the ambition of the owner, allied to the fact that it's Everton and all the fantastic history, which have proved to be key for me.

Farhad Moshiri, Everton's majority shareholder, is delighted with the appointment of the club's new manager and thinks that "his strong leadership will bring great motivation and get the best out of players". Moshiri went on to say:

Sam understands the long-term ambitions we have for this great club and I know he is a man who gives it his all and is focused 24 hours a day. Evertonians are the most passionate and best fans in the world and when the club does badly we all suffer. But in football everything changes very quickly, so I hope this will help to propel us to where we should be.
After Everton's 4-0 victory last time out and the appointment Big Sam, they will be hopeful and full of confidence going into the clash with mid-table Huddersfield Town at Goodison Park this Saturday.
