The first match-up between the two Manchester clubs results in a thrilling 1-2 victory for Manchester City on Sunday evening. Despite playing at Old Trafford, Mourinho's men failed to stop their super in-form rivals, leaving United trailing the league leaders by an 11-point gap.
The Red Devils are still in the race, but the gap between first and second is significant now, and they are relying on City to slip up to steal the crown right from under them. To add to a United fan's dismay, Paul Labile Pogba is out with an injury for a while after just returning to Old Trafford from another long-term injury. Manchester United's fixture list for the festive period is also worth noting as they face the likes of Leicester City and Everton away from home.
Manchester United fans were furious with the result their team suffered at home on Sunday. Many of them lost it in various post-match interviews conducted by The United Stand. The video that contains all the interviews can be found here. I strongly agree with the first interviewee on his stance regarding star forward Romelu Lukaku. He's underperformed heavily this season in comparison to his past free-scoring seasons with his previous sub-par clubs. Many of the fans are putting the loss on United manager Jose Mourinho. When being criticised in an official pre-match interview for not utilising his squads' height advantage over their opponents Mourinho said "I think it will be easy for [Vincent] Kompany to compete against [Juan] Mata in the air.”
Personally I think that City deserved this win. They were clearly the better side in every aspect and have been throughout the whole season. Pep Guardiola is also due a lot of credit with the miracles he's performed with the team he's got. The man is a tactical genius, and must be great with his players on a one-to-one basis because he manages to bring the best out of every single one with every team he's put in charge of.
Pep Guardiola's men out-played the Red Devils with their magnificent 'tiki-taka' style of play, just as they've done with every team in the league they've faced this season. This makes it 14 straight wins in the Premier League, just one away from breaking Arsenal's 2004 record. Some might even say that this victory may have City heading to an early coronation.
This result comes as no surprise. Manchester City have been the top dogs this season for quite a while now. They've scored a massive 52 goals in 17 games, only conceding 11 in the process. When comparing it to Manchester United's total 37 goals it's not very hard to predict the outcome of this match-up. Guardiola had this to add about the over-achieving performances his team has given this year:
It depends on the way we play. I believe now and until the last day of my career that you have to play good to win the game. I want to attack, control the game, concede a few counter attacks - but play good.
